7 Essential Tips for Taking Your Baby/Toddler to the Beach

Bringing your baby or toddler to the beach can be a fun and memorable experience for the whole family. Beaches can be scary for first time parents and honestly I was not much of a fan of them before I became a parent. So when we decided that one of our activities on vacation was a trip to the beach. I was less than enthused. However, it turned out to be an enjoyable experienced due to our careful planning and preparation to ensure a safe and enjoyable outing. In this blog post, I will provide you with seven essential tips to make your beach trip with your little one a breeze.

7 Essential Tips for Taking Your Baby/Toddler to the Beach

1. Choose the Right Time

Opt for early morning or late afternoon visits when the sun is less intense. This reduces the risk of sunburn and keeps your child comfortable during their beach adventure. Keep your child's nap schedule and your child's mood in mind when choosing which time is best. I know my daughter is happiest in the morning so we decided a morning trip was our best bet.

2. Pack the Essentials

Be sure to pack all the necessary items, including sunscreen with high SPF, hats, sunglasses, swim diapers, extra clothes, towels, blankets, and a beach shade or umbrella. Don't forget to bring a beach-friendly stroller or carrier for added convenience. Don't forget to bring plenty of breastmilk, milk, or formula in case your trip happens to be around the time your baby or toddler eats. I would also recommend eating on a blanket away from sand especially for toddlers. My daughter's favorite thing was dipping her snacks in sand like it was some kind of seasoning and trying to eat it.

3. Find a Baby-Friendly Beach

Look for beaches that offer amenities suitable for babies and toddlers, such as shallow waters, gentle waves, and clean sand. Consider a beach with actual sand instead of broken sea shells or rocks on the beach. The first beach we went to had broken shells instead of sand so needless to say, not the best idea for bringing toddlers. Some beaches even have designated play areas or baby pools to keep your little one entertained.

4. Create a Safe Zone

Set up a designated area for your baby or toddler, using a beach blanket or playpen. This helps create a safe and contained space where they can play without venturing too far. Ensure the area is shaded and away from any hazards like rocks or strong currents. Using umbrellas or baby tents are a great way to keep your baby or toddler out of the sun for long periods of time, but make sure you use plenty of sunscreen!

5. Stay Hydrated

Keep your child well-hydrated by offering water or age-appropriate beverages regularly. Avoid sugary drinks or excessive exposure to the sun, as it can lead to dehydration. Remember to bring snacks to keep their energy levels up. Bring plenty of water for yourself too to keep yourself hydrated. Trust me, when you have a toddler you will find yourself running after them every couple of minutes. My daughter chased seagulls for a 15 minutes across the beach and we both needed some water after that!

6. Embrace Sun Protection

Apply sunscreen generously and frequently to protect your child's delicate skin from harmful UV rays. Dress them in lightweight, breathable clothing that covers their arms and legs. Encourage them to wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses for added sun protection. You can find baby hats and clothing on Amazon that have UV protection for a little extra help with keeping your child safe from the sun.

7. Engage in Beach-Friendly Activities

Bring along beach toys, such as buckets, shovels, and sand molds, to keep your little one entertained. Engage them in building sandcastles, collecting seashells, or splashing in the shallow water. These activities will make their beach experience enjoyable and memorable.

Conclusion

Taking your baby or toddler to the beach can be a delightful adventure with proper planning and preparation. By following these essential tips, you can ensure their safety, comfort, and enjoyment during your beach outing. Cherish these precious moments, and create lasting memories with your little one by the sea.
