5 LGBTQ-Friendly Children's Shows

When I was growing up there was very little LGBTQ representation in media. There was only a small trace of it in adult shows let alone children's shows, but thankfully the entertainment industry has begun to move in the right direction. I cannot begin to explain how much it would have helped to see LGBTQ couples and parents portrayed in children's shows when I was growing up. These LGBTQ-friendly children's programs are providing the young audience with the valuable lessons about acceptance, self-expression, and celebrating differences (something us adults can learn a thing or two about too).Today's post will share 5 wonderful shows that have paved a path for LGBTQ representation in children's media and their positive impact on children.

5 LGBTQ-Friendly Children's Shows

1. "Steven's Universe"

I had to start with "Steven's Universe" as it now holds its' place in history for featuring the first ever same-sex wedding on a kid's show. It also holds the title as being my personal favorite LGBTQ show of all time. I purposely sought out this show as an adult because of this very fact, but the show holds so much more than this iconic moment. "Steven's Universe" follows the adventures of Steven, a young boy with magical powers and his three caretakers, Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl as they try to protect humanity. The show features diverse characters, including lesbian, gay, and non-binary individuals, promoting love and understanding among its viewers. It also takes on heavy topics like depression, PTSD, grief, and so much more. Parents can learn from this show right along with their little ones. It is by far my favorite LGBTQ show out there. You can find "Steven Universe" on Hulu!

2. "She-ra and The Princesses of Power"

This children show is another one I sought out as a childless adult (Don't judge me, I was in my desperate for LGBTQ-representation phase of coming out). But this show is so good, that I have absolutely no shame in having watched it. "She-ra and The Princesses of Power" is a remake of the original back in the 80s and it introduces a fantasy world where powerful princesses fight against evil. The show includes LGBTQ-characters, normalizing same-sex relationships and exploring themes of identity, friendship, and acceptance. There are several LGBTQ couples in this show including gay dads of one of the main cast. If you are looking for a show with strong female and non-binary characters, in a fantasy show, this is the show for you and your kiddos! "She-ra" is on Netflix!

3. "The Bravest Knight"

This heartwarming animated series follows the adventures of a young girl named Nia and her two dads, Sir Cedric and Prince Andrew. "The Bravest Knight" portrays same-sex couples in a loving and nurturing environment, teaching children the importance of love and acceptance. I am a sucker for shows with LGBTQ parents, probably because I am one, especially when they are shown in a positive light. "The Bravest Knight" can be found on Hulu.

4. "Andi Mack"

"Andie Mack"is another show that broke new ground in media by featuring an openly gay character, "Cyrus Goodman, in a Disney Channel series. The show tackles issues such as coming out and self-discovery, fostering conversations about LGBTQ-representation and acceptance among young viewers. This a great step for Disney and hopefully we will be seeing more representation in their movies soon! This can be found on Disney Plus.

5. "The Loud House"

"The Loud House" introduces audiences to Lincoln Loud, an 11-year-old boy growing up in a large, diverse family. The show subtly includes LGBTQ+ representation through the character of Clyde McBride, Lincoln's best friend who has two dads. By depicting a same-sex couple, the show promotes inclusivity and normalizes diverse family structures. This show can be found on Paramount Plus.

Conclusion

I know I have said it often, but LGBTQ representation whether it be in books or media is extremely important for fostering acceptance for not only the LGBTQ+ community but for allies as well. Shows that normalize same-sex family structures and relationships take a step towards showing children and adults that although a family or relationship may look different then their own, it does not mean there is anything wrong with it. Through positive representation and relatable storylines, these shows empower children to embrace diversity and foster a more inclusive world. As we celebrate these ground-breaking and remarkable series, let us continue to support and encourage the creation of even more LGBTQ_ friendly content for children, ensuring a brighter and more accepting future for us all.
